Got a basement?
Chances are you may have a sump pump. And if your basement is big and beautiful enough, you may have two.
A sump pump is your primary protection from outside rainwater intruding into your basement. Nobody cares about a sump pump when its running just fine, but everybody cares when it fails.
Whether your basement if finished or unfinished, many people use their basement for storage. And a lot of times, homeowners keep important documents and pictures in storage in a basement.
The best time to check on a sump pump is during a rainy day. A good idea is to check on it to see how it is performing when rainwater is coming into the sump pit. Watch for proper operation of the pump and the float. Listen for sound of the pump motor as is pumps the water out of the pit. A smooth running sump pump will remove the water out of the pit in a few seconds and perform flawlessly during the storm. If you notice the pump struggling to keep up, it might be a good time to think of replacement with a more powerful pump.
