Practicing Safety While Enjoying the Fire

Winter is here and nothing is better than gathering around the fireplace while it burning.  It's warmth and glow can create quite the ambiance.  Nevertheless, as cozy and warm as it seems, practicing safety while burning will keep the experience and memories going for a long time.  

Simple steps can be taken to prepare and maintain a fire in your fireplace:

• Ensure the damper or vent is opened and free of debris
• Use properly aged wood
• Clean out ash from previous fires to assist with proper air flow
• Have the chimney checked by a professional
• Never leave the fire unattended
• Keep fireplace tools out of a child's reach
• Install a carbon monoxide detector and smoke detector to alert you in case of an accident
